MB&B would like to congratulate MB&B junior Eric Sun for being awarded the Goldwater Scholarship for the 2022-2023 academic year. The Goldwater Scholarship, in partnership with the U.S. Department of Defense Education Program, award this prestigious scholarship each year to sophomores and juniors who want to pursue a research career in natural science, mathematics, or engineering. Sun, along with two other Yale juniors, were among the 417 students selected from a pool of over 5,000 applicants.

Eric Sun is double majoring in MB&B and Data Science. In the Dr. Andrew Xiao’s lab at Yale, Sun conducts research in the areas of DNA damage repair, epigenetics, and drug resistance in cancers. Before working in the Xiao lab, Sun worked at the NCI in the Oberdoerffer lab studying the role of macroH2A1 splice variants in DNA repair pathway choice. Outside of the lab, Sun is part of the advisory committee for the Statistics and Data Science Department and the advisory committee on science and quantitative reasoning. He also is a peer tutor for MB&B and volunteers at HAVEN Free Clinic. After graduating from Yale, he plans on pursuing a Ph.D. in genetics or cancer biology.

MB&B is extremely proud of Eric Sun for being a Goldwater recipient, and we look forward to seeing his future successes!
