MB&B/BQBS students awarded prestigious NSF graduate research fellowships

April 30, 2019

By Lisa Ogawa:  Congratulations to Clorice Reinhardt and incoming Biochemistry, Quantitative Biology, Biophysics and Structural Biology (BQBS) students, Sara Siwiecki and Caroline Brown. This year, Clorice, Sara, and Caroline were each awarded a National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Research Fellowship. NSF fellowships are highly competitive fellowships awarded to outstanding graduate students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) pursuing advanced research-based degrees in the United States (https://www.nsfgrfp.org/general_resources/about).

Clorice Reinhardt is a 2nd year in Molecular Biophysics & Biochemistry (MB&B) pursuing her doctorate in the laboratory of Dr. Sharon Hammes-Schiffer. Clorice earned her Bachelor of Science degree in biochemistry and molecular biology from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire before matriculating at Yale. At Yale, Clorice studies photoinduced proton-coupled electron transfer and is also a part of the Integrated Graduate Program in Physical and Engineering Biology (PEB) (https://www.uwec.edu/news/university-honors-program/university-honors-thesis-today-yale-tomorrow-2359/).

Caroline Brown is a senior at the University of North Georgia (UNG) where she will earn her Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry with a concentration in biochemistry. During her undergraduate studies she has had significant research experience in the sciences with Dr. Yu Wang at UNG and through an NSF Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program at the University of Minnesota (https://ung.edu/where-i-lead/students/brown-caroline.php).

Sara Siwiecki is a graduate of Chapman College in Orange, California (Class of 2018) where she earned her Bachelor of Science degree in biochemistry and molecular biology. Research experience includes working with Dr. Douglas Fudge on the biophysics of mucous expansion in hagfish slime as well as at Yale through a PEB summer program (https://blogs.chapman.edu/scst/2019/04/22/off-to-yale-with-a-nsf-graduate-research-fellowship/).

We commend these scholars on their achievements, and we look forward to welcoming Caroline and Sara to Yale this Fall!
