May 31, 2018

By Meaghan Sullivan; Maryn McKenna visited Yale at the invitation of MBB Professor Carl Zimmer to talk about her recent book, “Big Chicken: The Incredible Story of How Antibiotics Created Modern Agriculture and Changed the Way the World Eats”. Her talk explained the dangerous use of antibiotics in the food industry and how this is driving the rise of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Based on current usage, she warned that deaths from antibiotic-resistant infections could increase by a factor of ten, but also provided an optimistic outlook based on recent steps taken companies like Perdue. MBB students had a special opportunity to have breakfast with her the morning after the talk.
